Planning a Funeral While Grieving

Planning a Funeral While Grieving

Planning a Funeral for someone close is a terrible blow, no matter the circumstances. It can be a tremendously difficult time if you are in charge of arranging their funeral. Juggling funeral planning while grieving is never easy, but there are a few things you can do to help the process. This blog will look at those.

Pick the Funeral Products Most Suited to the Deceased.

Some people leave clear instructions regarding their funeral in their will. However, if the smaller details are left out, use your memories of your loved one to guide your choices when picking funeral products. What were their preferences? What would make them smile and do them proud? Doing this can bring comfort. Look at the budget, list what you need and then tailor it. Include memorial products that will capture your loved one’s memory.

Prepare for the Service

Consider the emotional needs of the whole family. It is great to have pictures and readings of letters, poems and stories, but you want to ensure you are prepared for the service as much as possible.

Depending on the type of funeral planned, you may wish to have an open coffin. You will need to ensure the funeral home offers this service. When you decide on the funeral home you are using, talk through as many details as possible with them. This will help you feel you are arranging the very best for your loved one and help the day run as smoothly as possible so you can spend the time paying your respects with your family.

Plan the service program to allow all speakers to prepare and know how long they have and when they are speaking. Also, consider seating arrangements and any hymns you may wish to include.

Invites and Logistics

Be sure to inform everyone you want to attend as soon as possible so they can make plans. You could ask a family member to do this once the date and venue are set.

Liaise with the funeral home to plan the logistics of the day. Are you hiring cars to follow the funeral car? Who is travelling in those cars? This can all feel overwhelming, so list these things and work through them individually, with plenty of breaks as you go. Once the funeral service has been planned, you will want to consider a venue for the reception. Hiring a venue is a great option, but you could hire a caterer and have it at a family home if you prefer.

Be Kind to Yourself

You are grieving, and so are your family. Do not feel you need to arrange a spectacular day with a busy schedule. A respectful send-off followed by a safe place to mourn the loss of a loved one is all you need. Be kind to yourself and ask for help when you feel overwhelmed.
