Who to inform about a death

The list of who to tell that someone has died can seem endless and there seems to be so much to do in planning the funeral. You don’t have to contact everyone in the first few days. Just make your own list of who is important to tell quickly and another list for contact after the funeral.

Obviously relatives and friends are at the top of the list and will want to know funeral details.

The first people to tell might include:

  • Any employer
  • School or college
  • Carers or those regularly visiting
  • Solicitor – in case there is a Will
  • Landlord
  • Banks and building societies
  • Benefit office (pension and any other benefits)
  • Tax Office
  • Local Authority (Council tax/Social services etc)

Eventually you will need to consider these organisations:

  • Return of any medical equipment
  • Returning a passport
  • DVLA to return a driving licience/ Car tax
  • Insurance companies
  • Utility companies
  • Pension companies
  • Mortgage company
  • Credit and store card companies
  • Loan companies
  • Royal Mail for redirection of mail
